we never really leave the places that change us

Leaving always feels more complete than it actually is. We pack our bags. We change our address. We convince ourselves that distance is enough to begin again. Yet certain places continue following us long after they disappear from view.

They return in unexpected ways. A familiar scent. The afternoon light falling across a wall. The rhythm of a conversation with someone who reminds us of another city and another season of our lives. Without asking permission, those places continue shaping the way we move through the world.

Perhaps that is the quiet gift of having lived well. We never really leave the places that change us because, in some small way, they never really leave us.
