sometimes leaving is how you learn what mattered

Some things are difficult to see while we are still inside them. A person. A place. A life we worked hard to build. Wanting something can keep us there longer than we realize. We become so focused on making it work that we stop asking what it is asking of us.

Then we leave, and different things begin to surface. We miss what was good. The small gestures. The familiarity. The parts we assumed would always be there. But we also notice ourselves returning in places we had slowly disappeared.

Maybe that is the strange thing about distance. It can make you appreciate something and question it at the same time. You can miss someone and recognize who you became around them. You can mourn an opportunity and realize how much of your life it was consuming.

Not everything we wanted was good for us simply because we wanted it badly. Sometimes desire keeps us committed to the idea of something long after the experience of it has changed.

Leaving does not always mean we chose correctly or incorrectly. Sometimes it simply gives us enough room to see what we could not see up close. What mattered. What cost us. What we lost. And what came back when we finally let go.
